Life

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), born in Virginia, was the principal author of the US Declaration of Independence (1776) and the country's third president (1801-1809). Shaped by the Enlightenment, he also wrote Notes on the State of Virginia (1785) and the Virginia bill for religious freedom (drafted in 1777, passed in 1786). On the big questions he matters for the idea that rights belong to a person before any government.
