Max Tegmark
Cosmologist: our world is a mathematical structure, and a computer simulating it only describes it, it does not make it exist.
Life
Swedish-American physicist born in 1967 in Stockholm, a professor at MIT. First a cosmologist, he proposed the mathematical universe hypothesis: our physical world is not just described by mathematics, it is a mathematical structure. He then turned to artificial intelligence and co-founded the Future of Life Institute, which works to reduce the major risks of advanced technologies.
Main works
If a reality exists outside us, then our physical world is a mathematical structure.
The popular book of the hypothesis: everything that exists is mathematical, including us.
Scenarios for what the world might become as artificial intelligence develops.
In his own words
« In conclusion, the role of the simulating computer is not to compute the history of our universe, but to specify it. »
