Life

German engineer (1910-1995), a pioneer of computing. In 1941 he put into service the Z3, often presented as the first working programmable computer, and from 1943 to 1945 he designed Plankalkül, the first high-level programming language. In 1967, then in his book "Rechnender Raum" (1969), he proposed that the universe itself is computed, like a cellular automaton: the starting point of "digital physics".
