Démocrite d'Abdère
Nothing exists but atoms and the void.
Fragments quoted by Sextus Empiricus (B 6 to B 11) essential
A few sentences by Democritus on knowledge, taken from three lost books (On Ideas, the Kratynteria, the Canons). Sextus writes c. 200 AD and quotes them for his own sceptical theses. The Greek we have contains copying errors.
The Great Diacosmos (Megas diakosmos) essential
His great physics book, lost. Diogenes Laertius notes that Theophrastus' school attributes it to Leucippus: one cannot always separate what belongs to one or the other. Aristotle says "Leucippus and Democritus" together.
On Tranquillity (Peri euthymies) essential
A lost book. Its opening sentence is known (B 3): Stobaeus quotes it in Greek and Seneca gives a Latin version. Seneca calls it "an excellent volume" (On Tranquillity of Mind, 2). Diogenes Laertius notes that the treatise "On Well-being" cannot be found.
Moral sayings (Stobaeus, "Golden Sayings" of Democrates)
Over 200 sayings under Democritus' name, transmitted mostly by Stobaeus and the "Democrates" collection. Some may come from another author. In our corpus: English only.
