In 30 secondsHoffman is a cognitive scientist at the University of California, Irvine. His 'interface theory' says evolution shaped our senses to help us survive, not to show the truth. What we see is like icons on a computer desktop: useful, but not a picture of the real thing. He goes further: space, time and physical objects are not fundamental, and reality is a network of conscious agents. He says his ideas are probably wrong in parts and holds them tentatively.

Does God exist?God
AtheismTheism
Interpretation
Position

He does not describe God as a person. He says the closest way to think of God is 'being', not a being: the ground of consciousness. He sees the world's religions as perspectives on one deeper consciousness, and words like God as pointers. He was raised in a fundamentalist Christian home.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

Talk of God, being itself or a collective consciousness has no testable meaning.

Hoffman

He says words like God or collective consciousness are pointers to something that transcends them.

Where does knowledge come from?Source of knowledge
Empiricism (from experience)Rationalism (from reason)
Interpretation
Position

He argues that evolution shaped our senses to show fitness payoffs, not the truth. He says that according to evolution by natural selection the probability is zero that any sensory system was shaped to see any truth about objective reality, and calls space, time and objects 'an adaptive fiction'.

Can we reach certain truths?Certainty
SkepticismCertainty attainable
Stated explicitly
Position

He is sceptical about perception and cautious about his own theory: he says 'I'll be the first to say I'm probably wrong' and that there is 'no such thing as a theory of everything'. For him theories are pointers, and science's gift is to tell exactly where each one stops.

Is the mind more than matter?Mind and body
1986
Materialism changedDualism
Stated explicitly
Position

He holds that consciousness is fundamental and the physical world comes from it. He calls this 'conscious realism' and says that in strict terms it is idealism, close to Bernardo Kastrup's. He says 'you can't start with unconscious ingredients and boot up consciousness', and that no theory of consciousness explains even one specific experience, such as the taste of chocolate.

1986 Before the shock of the 1980s he was a physicalist: he says he went into the field thinking that the neural basis of consciousness would be found, an approach he now thinks will not work. Video 2024 · Donald Hoffman, Consciousness,…

Why
What is objected, and the reply

Consciousness is an illusion produced by the brain; there are no inner experiences beyond what the brain's reports make us think.

Hoffman

He answers the illusionist view by asking for a scientific account of that illusion.

O
Objection

Putting consciousness first is only a hope: it has so far produced no technology and no precise mathematics.

Hoffman

He grants that the traditions that put consciousness first have produced no technology, whereas all of it came from physicalist science. He says he does not appeal to authority, wants precise mathematics and experiments, and that his ideas are probably wrong but better than the physicalist ones.

On the big questions

Does God exist?Pantheism

Closest camp: God is not a being but being itself, the ground of consciousness, and individuals are avatars of one infinite consciousness looking at itself.

Why

O

Talk of God, being itself or a collective consciousness has no testable meaning.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Is the mind the brain? The mind is not matter

Closest camp: the mind is not matter. In his view matter and spacetime come from consciousness, which he calls fundamental. He says the real task is the reverse of the hard problem: show how networks of conscious agents create what we call brains.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Should we fear death? The soul survives

He says that in his framework it is possible that some aspect of his consciousness survives death, perhaps bare awareness without content, unlike in physicalism. He compares death to taking off a headset, and says near-death reports deserve a careful look.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

The soul is made of matter and scatters when the body dies, so nothing survives.

Hoffman

He says physicalism does imply that consciousness ends with the brain, but if consciousness is fundamental, some aspect of it may survive; death is like taking off the headset.

O
Objection

Near-death experiences are produced by a dying brain and prove nothing about survival.

Hoffman

He says they may hold good data about leaving the interface, but should be taken with a grain of salt.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Can a machine think?Understanding is missing

He says AIs could be a window into consciousness but will not create it: a computer program cannot make consciousness, though technology might one day open new portals into conscious agents that already exist.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

If a machine behaves like a thinking being, we have no better reason to deny it thought.

Hoffman

He says a complicated enough unconscious system does not create consciousness, AI included, though AIs could be a window into consciousness.

O

Man is a machine that winds its own springs: thought is only the work of a complex mechanism.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Why is there something rather than nothing? The first mystery

He says the existence of conscious experiences is the 'miracle' his theory assumes, like any theory. He thinks we will never fully solve how the formless gives birth to form.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O
Objection

A theory that simply assumes conscious experience explains nothing: it only moves the mystery.

Hoffman

He says the existence of conscious experiences is the miracle his theory assumes, as every theory assumes some miracle.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Is the world real?It is all in the mind

Space, time and objects are an interface, a headset; reality is a network of conscious agents. He says neurons do not exist when they are not perceived, and that he is not a solipsist. Unlike simulation theorists such as Bostrom, he thinks the bottom level is not physical.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O
Objection

If neurons do not exist when nobody perceives them, then neuroscience and the rest of science become meaningless.

Hoffman

He says this is compatible with funding neuroscience, and that even the pointers on instruments are not reality, yet science stays testable.

O

The success of science would be a miracle if our senses did not show the world at least partly as it is.

Hoffman

He says science stays testable even though instrument pointers are not objective reality.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Can science explain everything?True, but not everything

He loves science and wants more funding for neuroscience, but says science itself tells us there is no theory of everything. He sees that as good news: exploration never ends.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

A theory is scientific only if it can be refuted: can a theory of conscious agents be tested?

Hoffman

He says science stays testable even though the pointers on instruments are not objective reality, and calls his own theory only version 1.0.

O

Science can in principle explain everything, so there is no deep mystery left.

Hoffman

He says science itself tells us there is no theory of everything, and calls that good news because exploration never ends.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Does time really exist?Time is in the mind

He calls space and time 'illusions of our projection', like an icon that is useful but not the file itself. He adds that space-time falls apart at the Planck scale, so it cannot be fundamental.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

Our relief when something unpleasant is over shows that the present really moves on: time is not just an illusion.

How the ideas evolved

Click a step for details
  1. 1987 Change of mindThe aha moment

Around 1987, working with the mathematicians Bruce Bennett and Chetan Prakash, he sees that his own mathematical model of perception implies that what we see is a user interface, not the truth. He says he had to sit down: the mathematics 'slapped me in the face'.

    In their words
« there actually was a an aha moment »He dates his aha moment to about 1987 while writing Observer Mechanics with Bruce Bennett and Chetan Prakash. watch
« It's just not possible to boot up a theory of consciousness from physical »He says no physical system, neurons, microtubules or AI, can boot up a theory of consciousness. watch
« neurons do not exist when they're not perceived »He says neurons do not exist when not perceived, and that this is compatible with funding neuroscience. watch
  2. 1989Observer Mechanics

He co-authors Observer Mechanics: A Formal Theory of Perception, an early theory of consciousness and its relation to physics.

  3. 1998Visual Intelligence

He publishes Visual Intelligence: How We Create What We See, for a general audience: we construct what we see.

  4. 2014Telling colleagues he does not see the truth

In a talk on entangling conscious agents he says he now believes his perceptions do not reflect reality, against the standard view of most perception scientists that evolution makes us see truly. He says he also meditates and that the two ways of working feed each other.

    In their words
« recently I've been telling my colleagues in cognitive Neuroscience that that I now believe that that I don't see the truth »In 2014 he says he now believes his perceptions do not reflect reality. watch
« I'm not just one conscious agent I'm a whole infinite Network »He describes himself as an infinite network of conscious agents, not a single one. watch
  5. 2016Fitness beats truth

In a Quanta Magazine interview he explains his argument with Chetan Prakash: a creature that sees reality as it is is never fitter than one tuned only to fitness. Perception works like a desktop interface, with useful icons that hide what is behind them.

  6. 2019The Case Against Reality

His book brings the interface theory and conscious realism to a wide audience. In November and December 2019 he explains it on the ZDoggMD podcast and on Sam Harris's Making Sense. On ZDoggMD he adds that his ideas are probably wrong in parts and must be held tentatively.

    In their words
« I don't think you can start with unconscious ingredients and boot up consciousness »He says you cannot start from unconscious ingredients and boot up consciousness. watch
« I'm probably wrong »He says the ideas he puts forward are probably wrong, but better than the physicalist ones. watch
« mathematics is like the bones within consciousness it's the structure of consciousness »He sees mathematics as the bones of consciousness, essential but not the whole of it. watch
  7. 2022Conscious realist, not idealist

On the Lex Fridman Podcast he says he left physicalism because unconscious ingredients cannot boot up consciousness. He prefers the name 'conscious realist' to 'idealist', stresses that his theory is only a version 1.0, and says there will never be a theory of everything.

    In their words
« Pointers are just pointers »He says even the instruments' pointers are not objective reality, yet science stays testable. watch
« the face that I see is just a symbol that I create »He says the face he sees is a symbol he creates, a portal into someone's real consciousness. watch
« there is no such thing as a theory of everything »He says there is no theory of everything and that his own conscious agent theory is only version 1.0. watch
  8. 2024Idealism, but not the Bostrom simulation

He says strictly speaking his view is philosophical idealism, and that he rejects both pillars of Bostrom-style simulation theory: that physics is fundamental and that programs can create consciousness.

    In their words
« I think that we just have to bite the bullet and say space and time aren't fundamental »He says we must bite the bullet and accept that space and time are not fundamental. watch
« I'm disagreeing with both points so the two critical points of their simulation hypothesis I think are false »He rejects both assumptions of Bostrom-style simulation theory: fundamental physics and computer-made consciousness. watch
« strictly speaking what I'm doing is is philosophically idealism »He says that strictly speaking his view is philosophically idealism, close to Bernardo Kastrup's. watch
  9. 2025The trace logic

He says that in the previous six months he found what he calls the trace logic, a way to join two conscious agents into one, from which he hopes to derive the structure of space-time. He stresses that it is not yet proven.

    In their words
« I'm not going back to the authority »He says he does not appeal to authority, and that consciousness-first has so far given no technology or precise mathematics. watch
« So spacetime isn't the final reality »He says space-time is a trivial part of the reality that opens up when we step outside it. watch
« it's the consciousness that's first »He says consciousness is first and gives rise to space-time. watch

Defends · 4
The hard problem of consciousness and zombiesDavid Chalmers · Is the mind the brain?

He says he was prompted by how little progress physicalist approaches have made on the hard problem of consciousness, and starts from consciousness instead. He proposes to solve the reverse problem: how conscious agents create what we call brains.

The mill: perception is not a machineLeibniz · Is the mind the brain?

He says Leibniz had the same idea in the Monadology: perceiving entities are more fundamental than the physical world, and neurons cannot create consciousness.

Time is the form of our inner sense: real for experience, nothing in itselfKant · Does time really exist?Mixed

He agrees with Kant that we do not see nature as it is and that space and time are forms of our perception, but says Kant was wrong to think Euclidean space-time is a priori.

To be is to be perceived: there is no matterGeorge Berkeley · Is the world real?Mixed

He says there is a lot in common with Berkeley, but he avoids the word idealism because it is often tied to anti-science and anti-realism. He wants a mathematically precise, testable theory of a real network of conscious agents.

Criticizes · 2
The simulation argument: three possibilities, one of which is trueNick Bostrom · Is the world real?

He likes the point that we do not see reality as it is, but disagrees on two things: the bottom level is not physical space-time, and computation cannot give rise to conscious experience.

There are no qualia: Dennett's intuition pumpsDaniel Dennett · Is the mind the brain?

He answers illusionists (Dennett, Frankish, Graziano) that consciousness does not seem to him an illusion, and that if it is, they owe a scientific account of the illusion.

Allies and opponents

Close, influences
BBernardo KastrupClose

He says his view is philosophically idealism and closest to Kastrup's analytical idealism.

FFederico FagginClose

A close friend; they agree that one fundamental consciousness takes many perspectives on itself, but he objects to the word 'fields', which suggests quantum fields in space-time.

RRupert SpiraClose

He says he and Rupert Spira are substantially in agreement: his mathematics also says there is one ultimate consciousness that no mathematics can fully describe.

SSwami SarvapriyanandaClose

He says he would listen to Advaita Vedanta with the same grain of salt he gives scientists, and finds the top-level ideas very similar to his.

Disagree
Roger PenroseDisagrees

He says the quantum model of consciousness by Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff does not go far enough.

Nick BostromDisagrees

He agrees with Nick Bostrom that we do not see reality as it is, but rejects a physical bottom level and the idea that programs make consciousness.

Daniel DennettDisagrees

He disagrees with Daniel Dennett and Keith Frankish, who treat consciousness as an illusion.

GGiulio TononiDisagrees

He has asked Tononi to explain one specific experience, such as the taste of chocolate, with integrated information theory, and says no theory of this kind can.

MMichael GrazianoDisagrees

He answers Graziano's view that there are only illusions of conscious experience by asking for a scientific account of them.

Signature ideas

Interface theory of perception

Perception works like a desktop interface: it hides the underlying reality and shows only what guides useful behaviour. With collaborators he reports a theorem and simulations claiming that organisms tuned to truth cannot outcompete organisms tuned to fitness. Later he uses the image of a virtual reality headset that evolution gave us to play the game of life.

Conscious realism

Reality is 'a vast social network of interacting conscious agents'. Space and time are 'just a data structure', a user interface, not the ground of things. Mathematics is the bones of consciousness, but not all of it.

Neurons are icons, not causes

He says the brain is a symbol in our headset with no causal powers: no neural activity causes experience, the other way round holds. He still wants more funding for neuroscience, because what lies behind the icons is far more complicated.
