In 30 secondsŽižek is a Slovenian philosopher, often called a Hegelian-Lacanian because he reads the German thinker Hegel through the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. He studies how ideology shapes our lives even when we do not believe in it, and why a subject can never be reduced to its social role. He is an atheist who says the only way to be a real atheist is through Christianity, an idea he calls Christian atheism.

Does God exist?God
AtheismTheism
Stated explicitly
Position

He calls himself an atheist, and also a "Christian atheist". For him, Christianity is more atheist than ordinary atheism, because on the Cross God himself is abandoned and the guarantee of meaning disappears. In his own words (2024): "to really be an atheist it's not enough [...] to say Okay God doesn't exist [...] you must go deep into Christianity". He refuses the label of "cultural Christian".

Why
What is objected, and the reply

Religion is a delusion: science shows there is no God, and that is all an atheist needs to say.

Žižek

He answers that saying in the abstract that God does not exist and science shows it is not enough: to be really an atheist you must go deep into Christianity.

O

Religion is the opium of the people, a comfort that keeps oppression in place.

Žižek

In his debate with Peterson he says that, as an atheist, he accepts the spiritual value of what happens in Christianity.

Is the mind more than matter?Mind and body
MaterialismDualism
Stated explicitly
Position

He defends a Hegelian materialism: in 2026 he says he uses quantum mechanics "as an argument for materialism", because something real precedes our observation. But he rejects naive naturalism: the subject is a void, not a thing.

Why
What is objected, and the reply

Quantum physics shows that reality depends on the observer, which supports idealism rather than materialism.

Žižek

He uses the same argument for materialism: something real, the Real, comes before our observation.

O

The mind is a separate thing, not matter: I know myself as a thinking being before I know any body.

Žižek

He keeps materialism but not a reduction to things: for him the subject is a void, not an object in the world.

Does life have a given meaning?Meaning of life
No given meaning (absurd, to be created)Objective meaning (nature, God, the Good)
Interpretation
Position

Daily rituals are for him "an empty appearance of meaning" by which we counter the chaotic meaninglessness of our lives.

Are humans naturally good?Human nature
Fundamentally weak or corruptFundamentally good or perfectible
Stated explicitly
Position

In the 2019 debate with Peterson he calls himself a pessimist: "I don't believe in human goodness", and mocks Marxists' "stupid optimist anthropology".

On the big questions

Does God exist?Atheism

He is an atheist, but reads Christianity as the religion that undoes its own God.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Is the mind the brain? The mind comes from matter

A Hegelian materialism, not a reduction of the subject to the brain.

The question on the site: all the arguments
What is happiness?No lasting happiness

Happiness is not a goal to pursue directly ("if you directly want to be happy it's always self-destructive"); he adds that psychoanalysis shows we also want to suffer.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

The aim of life is happiness, and we can learn to get there, for example by calming our desires.

Žižek

He answers that happiness is a by-product: if you directly want to be happy, it is always self-destructive.

O
Objection

Buddhism shows that suffering can be ended by letting go of desire.

Žižek

He answers that psychoanalysis shows we also want to suffer, and that this cannot be reduced.

The question on the site: all the arguments
Who am I, really? No fixed self

From Descartes to Hegel, the wealth of our personality is "a mask" over a void; he keeps the void, not the content.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

I know with certainty that I am a thinking self, one that persists as the same.

Žižek

He says that from Descartes to Hegel modern philosophy teaches that the wealth of our personality is a mask over a void.

O

My identity is the story I tell about my life.

Can a machine think?An ill-posed question

Asking whether AI can "think like us" is the wrong question; AI may produce a different form of spirituality.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

A machine only shuffles symbols by rules, so it cannot understand anything.

Are humans good by nature? Both at once

He does not believe in human goodness and never underestimates evil or envy, but he also calls us basically half decent people whom ideology can lead to horrors.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

Man is naturally good; society is what corrupts him.

No known reply from them.
The question on the site: all the arguments
Does history have a direction? No direction

For him history has no guaranteed direction: he says we must leave behind both the dream of an end of history and the Marxist dream of a history that points somewhere; big plans tend to turn wrong and the future stays radically open.

Why
What is objected, and the reply
O

History has an end point: the best political system has been found.

Žižek

He mocks the idea: we know where we are today.

O

Reason governs history, so it moves toward its goal.

Žižek

He says Hegel is not a naive absolute idealist who thinks everything will turn out well: he shows how a good idea almost necessarily turns wrong.

The question on the site: all the arguments

In their words

The only way to be an atheist is through Christianity.
The true formula of atheism is not God doesn't exist but God is unconscious.
A materialist can say that although he knows that there is no God the idea of a God nonetheless still moves him.
For me the message of the death of Christ is we are delivered to ourselves.

How the ideas evolved

Click a step for details
  1. 1989The Sublime Object of Ideology

His first English-language book. In it and later works he argues that ideology is made of fictions that structure daily life, mostly unconsciously. It can shape what we do even when we do not believe in it, and cynicism alone does not escape it.

  2. 2000The Fragile Absolute

Subtitled "Or, Why Is the Christian Legacy Worth Fighting For?" It argues that Christianity holds an emancipating potential worth defending, even by an atheist.

  3. 2009Debate with John Milbank

In The Monstrosity of Christ, Žižek defends a Hegelian Christian atheism against the Catholic theologian John Milbank, who defends belief in a transcendent God. The debate turns on paradox versus dialectic.

  4. 2010Hegel before Lacan

Early on he treated Lacan as central. In 2010 he said that Hegel is more fundamental for him.

  5. 2010Why only an atheist can be a true Christian

In a Princeton talk he says a materialist can know there is no God and still be moved by the idea of God. He presents himself as an "emphatic" atheist who is turning more and more to Hegel and the big questions.

    In their words
« a materialist can say that although he knows that there is no God the idea of a God nonetheless still moves him »A materialist can know there is no God and still be moved by the idea of God. watch
  6. 2012Buddhism, the Western version

In a Toronto lecture he predicts that the future lies with Buddhism, but a popular Western Buddhism, and criticizes it: psychoanalysis shows that we also want to suffer.

    In their words
« my prediction that the future lies with Buddhism but I'm critical about it it's not so much authentic Buddhism as a kind of a popular Western Buddhism »Predicts a future for Buddhism, but critically: not authentic Buddhism, rather a popular Western Buddhism. watch
« if there is a point of psychoanalysis is that uh we want to suffer and it's irreducible »Against Buddhism's first premise, psychoanalysis says we also want to suffer, and this cannot be reduced. watch
« the lesson of all radical modern philosophers the cart k Hegel is no our the wealth of our personality is just a mask there is a void there »Modern philosophy from Descartes to Hegel teaches that the wealth of our personality is a mask over a void. watch
  7. 2013The Pervert's Guide to Ideology

In this film he says Christianity is more atheist than usual atheism, and that the only way to be an atheist is through Christianity.

  8. 2014Absolute Recoil

Subtitled "A New Foundation of Dialectical Materialism". It follows his big Hegel book Less Than Nothing and reworks his idea of a void that produces what it withdraws from.

  9. 2019Debate with Jordan Peterson

In Toronto he calls himself a pessimist who does not believe in human goodness. As an atheist he still accepts the spiritual value of what is unique to Christianity.

    In their words
« while without religion good people would have been doing good things and bad people bad things only something like religion can make good people do bad things »In his opening, he quotes Steven Weinberg: only religion makes good people do bad things; he rejects the claim that without God everything is permitted. watch
« I don't believe in human goodness I will never underestimate evil »Calls himself a pessimist: he does not believe in human goodness and never underestimates evil. watch
« usually Marxists have this stupid optimist anthropology just get rid of capitalist terror and we will all be happy »Contrasts himself with Marxists, whom he says hold a naive optimistic view of human nature. watch
  10. 2024Christian atheism, in his own words

Presenting his book on Christian atheism, he says the death of Christ means "we are delivered to ourselves", rejects the label of cultural Christian, and calls the Holy Spirit a community of equals without hierarchy.

    In their words
« to really be an atheist it's not enough in this abstract way you know to say Okay God doesn't exist science shows us and so on you must go deep into Christianity »Says he is an atheist, but that real atheism requires going through Christianity, not just saying God does not exist. watch
« for me the message of the death of Christ is we are delivered to ourselves »The death of Christ means we are left to ourselves: no higher divine destiny guarantees a happy end. watch
« because only through fall as a reaction to it we became aware to goodness without the background of the Fall there is no goodness »Defends the idea of the happy fall (felix culpa): without the Fall there would be no awareness of goodness. watch
  11. 2026Christian atheism and artificial intelligence

At a Munich conference he calls himself a Christian atheist, citing Hegel on Christ abandoned by God on the Cross, and argues that with AI the subject recognizes itself in the gaps of the digital other, not by appropriating it.

    In their words
    « that's why I proclaim myself a why not I think it's a correct term a Christian atheist »Proclaims himself a Christian atheist. watch
« the only reconciliation with God is that you see that precisely as abandoned to God you identify with Christ who was himself abandoned by God on the cross »Reading Hegel, reconciliation with God means identifying with Christ abandoned on the Cross: the gap between us and God is already a gap in God. watch
« imagine the 12 camel as my favorite name of God you know it doesn't have to exist »With a joke about 11 camels, he says the twelfth camel is his favourite name of God: it does not need to exist. watch

Defends · 5
The fetishism of commoditiesMarx · Can we be certain of anything?

He takes Marx's commodity fetishism and reworks it: today people know they follow an illusion, but still do it. Money is his example.

Religion, the opium of the peopleMarx · Does God exist?Mixed

In On Belief he is tempted to revive the old line about religion as the "opium of the people", but aims it at "Western Buddhism" rather than at Christianity.

The Son of God died: it is credible, because it is unfittingTertullien · Should we believe without proof?

He calls Tertullian "my hero" and "not irrationalist": real belief cannot rest only on objective reasoning, there must be a moment of absurdity in it.

Reason governs history: the cunning of reasonHegel · Does history have a direction?Mixed

He keeps Hegel but reads him against the optimistic reading: a good idea almost necessarily turns wrong, and only a second attempt may succeed.

'I obeyed' is no excuse: Eichmann and responsibilityHannah Arendt · Must we always obey the law?

He does not cite Eichmann, but defends the same point: duty is no excuse, and we are never the mere instrument of a higher cause.

Criticizes · 1
Liberal democracy, end point of the history of ideasFrancis Fukuyama · Does history have a direction?

He rejects the end of history: Fukuyama's claim that history had reached its end is refuted by where we are today.

Signature ideas

Christian atheism

Atheism often keeps a religious structure by relying on an outside guarantor of meaning. The Christian doctrine of the incarnation removes that guarantee: on the Cross, God is abandoned and the Father dies too. The Holy Spirit is then the community of the God-forsaken. With Hegel, the Fall retroactively creates what it is a fall from: without it, no awareness of goodness.

The subject cannot be reduced to its role

A person can take a social or symbolic position, but is never only that position. For Žižek, subjectivity appears through the failure of that symbolic role. In psychoanalysis, he says, the subject is not primarily spontaneous free will but a set of unconscious decisions; the death drive, a radical indecision, is what makes us human.

Absolute recoil

Taking a passage of Hegel's Science of Logic, he argues that something can emerge from its own loss, a "downward" movement instead of Hegel's upward synthesis. A reviewer finds the idea hard to turn into a materialism.
